Community Contribution

We care about our communities

Supporting Communities

We believe in making a contribution to the communities in which we live and work.

Over 24,000 families rely on us to maintain their homes.

Community projects we have managed for our customers include:

Transforming cold and damp houses into warm, dry and well-ventilated homes: We install carpets and drapes where they’re needed as well as ventilation equipment like bathroom and kitchen fans.

Making driveways risk-free for drivers and yards safe for children: We ensure driveways and garages are fenced and that play areas are separate and safe.

Improving safety of homes by removing toxins: We safely remove old lead-based paint that has the potential to cause health problems, and any unsafe asbestos that are commonly found in older houses.

An extensive exterior house painting programme for over forty years, that has upgraded more than 10,000 homes.

Caring at Christmas

We have a tradition of delivering food hampers and gifts to “Kāinga Ora Community Group Housing tenants tenants and others in need at Christmas time. Our people love getting personally involved and enjoy being directly in touch with our communities.

Supporting Schools

The following are other examples of our involvement in our communities:

  • We donate computer equipment to schools in our communities.
  • Spencers supported Northland College's carpentry programme in Kaikohe, providing tools, work, guidance and funding to the college and its students.
  • Spencers implemented an initiative with Tikipunga High School in Whangarei to encourage local youth into the workforce. The project included providing opportunities for practical industry-related work experience where selected students from the school’s trade classes attended a workplace for one day each week.
  • We have employed and supported young workers through apprenticeships.
  • In association with Manurewa High School we placed four students in a work experience programme. Three of these students are now employees of SW Scaffolding Ltd - Click here to read article

Supporting Local Business

We do whatever we can to help our trades subcontractors succeed.  Running your own sustainable business is a challenge, so we provide a free health and safety planning advisory service and resources and help out with interest free loans to purchase essential equipment such as mobile scaffolding.

In 2016 we worked closely with the Ministry of Social Development (Work and Income NZ), other social agencies, and some of our trades contractors on an industry training programme.

The programme was open to our trades subcontractors companies that had hired an employee through WINZ. It provided training on topics that helped them better run their businesses: financial management, employment rights and responsibilities, health and safety, communication skills, and understanding people's learning styles.
The new employees participated in training such as literacy, numeracy, communication skills, and money management.

Volunteer Days

Our employees take a day each year to participate in volunteer work of their choice, that contributes to the wellbeing of their customers or communities, or to environmental sustainability.
