Supporting Communities
Spencers is dedicated to helping our communities thrive
- Building Better Businesses – wrap-around support for local businesses
- A Helping Hand for Local Youth – apprentices and school programmes
- Being a Good Neighbour – specific neighbourhood events and initiatives
Many of our employees and contractors live in the communities we work in. All our employees get a paid volunteer day every year towards sustainability or at a community organisation of their choice.

Community play ground upgrades.
At Christmas time, we visit Kainga Ora Community Group Housing tenants and others in need to deliver festive food hampers.
We are always looking for ways to add value, and we are open to hearing ideas about new ways to contribute.

HUDSON SELLARS APPRENTICE SCHOLARSHIP
Spencers’ Hudson Sellars Apprentice Scholarship benefits apprentice employees of our solid and professional trades contractor employers, who are great mentors to their apprentices.
Women in Trades Expo
Spencers’ Northland team was pleased to be part of a special event, the Women in Trades Expo, in Whangārei in November. This event encourages and supports women to enter the construction industry, and celebrates women working in construction. It was hosted by Te Matarau and supported by local companies Whanga-Ara-Rau and Hanga-Ara-Rau.
Beach Cleanup – Petone
Petone beach is shared by all of the community and its visitors. As it is connected to the river, rubbish is dragged onto the beach and does require maintenance to keep it clear. Spencers arranged a beach clean for October, and will schedule these at regular intervals to keep the beach in a nice condition.
Supporting schools
Our school support program includes donating valuable computer equipment and tools - but we don’t just send material goods. Our initiatives involve employing and supporting young workers through apprenticeships, providing opportunities for work experience for trades students - and funding and guidance towards encouraging students to participate in the trades.
Supporting Local Business
We understand the challenges trade businesses face and love to help them succeed. That’s why we provide free Health and Safety planning and advisory services.
Volunteer days
Our employees take a day each year to participate in volunteer work that contributes to the well-being of their customers or communities or environmental sustainability.
